This weekend I’ve created yet another screen saver. I decided, though, that this one will not be a freebie.

On the option button you have a section for a registration key for the solar system screensaver. If I may ask what that is for, maybe additional extras for that screensaver?

I think Mercury’s orbit looks a bit slow… are you sure it’s an acurate model in regard to period of orbits?

You’re right about the orbits. I’m going to tune up the orbits in the next release.
To compute really accurate orbits you need to solve Kepler’s equation using a series expansion then plug in all of the ephemeris data (period eccentricity, orbital inclination, ascencion, perhilion, aphelion, etc) from NASA. I had originally intended to do this (see my projects page) but since I was going to shrink/expand everything all of this detail would have been lost. I ended up adjusting the orbital radius and rotation rates by hand.

Caleb, this is a fantastic screen saver. I download lots of scrensavers and most of them I throw away, but not this one, that’s for sure. I can hardly believe you could produce this in a weekend. Please let me know if you update it somehow, and also if you produce any others this good. By the way, I downloaded Spline Saver, and when I try to launch it, Solar System launches instead. I’ve downloaded it a couple of times, but the same thing always happens. I’m curious to see what it looks like. I’m running 10.4.9 by the way, if that means anything. So anyway, I’ve sent you my money, it’s well worth it, and I hope to hear about more of your artistry.

To smooth out the motion you can decrease the time factor and/or the resolution of the star field within the screen saver preferences.
